1 billion gallons of camelina biofuels, $5.5 billion in new revenue, 25,000 jobs by 2025: new report

Biomass Advisors, the research division of Biofuels Digest, projected that one billion gallons of Camelina biofuel would be produced for the aviation and biodiesel sectors by 2025, creating 25,000 new jobs; producing over $5.5 billion in new revenues and $3.5 billion in new agricultural income for U.S. and Canadian farmers.

Shell, Cosan announce $21 billion Brazilian ethanol JV: largest biofuels deal ever

In Brazil, Royal Dutch Shell announced an MOU with Cosan (CZZ) to make the largest investment in the history of biofuels, with an agreement to establish a 50-50 Brazilian ethanol joint venture with Cosan which will own 4,500 retail stations, sugar, ethanol, fuel distribution and power generation, and  the Shell aviation fuel distribution business. Aviation biofuels are the hottest topic in the field as 2010 begins, no question about it. This month, Rentech signed an off-take agreement with 13 airlines for renewable, drop-in jet fuel made from waste biomass; AltAir signed with 14 airlines for renewable, drop-in jet fuel made from camelina oil. Later this quarter, Dynamic Fuels will open a commercial-scale facility in Louisiana that can manufacture up to 75 million gallons per year, again from waste biomass. (more…)

15 airlines sign with Rentech, AltAir for 325 million gallons per year in renewable jet biofuel

In Washington, the Air Transport Association of America announced that 15 airlines from the US, Canada, Germany and Mexico have signed MOUs with AltAir Fuels and Rentech – for the entire output of two new biofuel facilities that will be constructed in Mississippi and Washington state. (more…)

KLM to test biofuels with passengers on flight, on November 23

In the Netherlands, KLM announced that it would become the first airline to test biofuels on a passenger flight. The company said that it would utilize a 50/50 mixture of camelina and standard jet fuel in a one-hour Boeing 747 flight on November 23 that would include, for the first time, a limited number of passengers. In Florida, Biofuels Digest released its list of current investors backing the Hottest 20 Companies in Bioenergy. (Note: The Hottest 50 companies in Bioenergy rankings for 2008-09 were released last December).

Overall, of the top 20 companies, two were privately held by individual private investors (POET and Aquaflow Bionomic), two are public (BlueFireEthanol and Novozymes), five are subsidiaries or joint ventures of major industrial firms (DuPont Danisco, Iogen, UOP, Petrobras Biocombutives, and AbengoaEnergy), and 11 are backed by venture capital.
